DOWNBEAT December Issue

'Ohana' is a bright collection of originals featuring guest spots by Gabe Baltazar, trumpeter Tiger Okoshi & pianist Makoto Ozone.  The moods shift wonderfully, from the Cuban beats of "Sietes Noches" to the island lull of "Ohana" & hard bop of "Cinder Cone".

Highlights include "Myclonic Jerk", w/Tiger's blazing trumpet, & Allen Leong's burbling Hammond B-3 on "You Buggah".  Okimoto is a promising composer & an outstanding vibraphonist.

This recording features 4 friends, 3 of which grew up together in Hawaii.  Since then, bassist Benny Rietveld has played with Miles Davis, & currently is the bass player for Santana.  Sax player, Allen Won lives in New York, teaching & has payed in popular Broadway shows.  Noel Okimoto lives on Oahu & plays daily with the Royal Hawaiian band & plays around town for many visiting jazz artists.  Jamie Fox teaches guitar & gigs in New York.
